What is with 3D and new movies today?

A lot of new movies and sequels are being released lately and in the pipeline like NEVER before. Is this a new direction in the movie industry? Do you need 3D glasses for all these movies? The new Resident Evil Movie is being shot in something called IMAX 3D. I like the idea of watching a 3D movie without the need for silly glasses, is this where we are at as 3D glasses seems so 80's?

You can't not notice the new 3D direction new movies are going in. I don't understand it and what it means to US, the AUDIENCE.

Of course money will be a BIG factor in this as with anything in the movie industry. Has any1 got any thoughts on this or can they shed more light on this new 3D Movies thing?

3D movie tickets are more expensive (+1,5 € usually) than normal movie tickets, so it's a question of money.

It's really a question of making money. The trade off is the current cost of making movies in actual 3D, with a 3D rig(as opposed to post processing, and "upgrading" a movie to 3D), which is why it costs more to make a movie in 3D, and one of the reasons they charge more. Of course, the other is simply to charge more money and MAKE more money. I, personally, could not care less about 3D, and I actually stay away from it. I don't see the point of going to atch a mediocre movie just because it's got a ne gimmick. It's a way to make an average crap film seem better than it is, much like how the promotional interviews with the stars of Transformers said that the cgi made the movie. If you need one special thing to make a movie watchable, it's not a great movie. give me a great plot and good actors with a plain old camera(and a competent director, mind you) anyday.

They just want you to go to the movies!

3D is a cinema only experience for most of us as we don't have 3D capable TVs or glasses in the home as standard

also stops a lot of cam piracy as the movie has to be taped via one lens of the glasses which is not the easiest thing to pull off

Because my eyes can't handle 3-D (I can't even see the images imbedded in 3-D pictures) so I end up not trying. My computer does in movies in HD but I miss out on 3-D movies. I honestly wish this craze to be over and done with. I see out of one eye at a time. If I keep switching from one eye to the other, I see them only with the eye that's engaged so they are all red or all all blue. or they are seem to to be a mix of the two......which ends up, for me. an unwatchable movie

Hmmm 3d animated cartoons are ok. But other movies in 3d: 3d kinda ruins them.

They tend to have a dull color and you don't even notice the 3d after a while.
Saw tron in 3D and a normal version. Normal version was better: had better color and brightness.
